I just returned from Vegas after a 7 day trip, I have been without a comuter- thus no updates!
When I arrived in Vegas my first stop to play some poker was Bellagio, I have said in the past that I call MGM home as far as poker goes but on this trip I wanted to concentrate more on mid-stakes limit games and try to avoid no-limit hold’em for a change. More so becuase I’m just sick of playing no-limit and I truly believe that Omaha high/low is my best game. I was also hoping that there would be some mixed games going which I actualy prefer over straight Omaha.
When I arrived at Bellagio there was one $30/60 Omaha game going and was full so I sat down at $2/5 no limit while I wait. I was surprised that Bellagio capped their no-limit games at 100bb so max buy-in at $2/5 was $500 – I have spoke on this before and I reiterate that I hate the idea of a poker room telling you how much you can buy-in for. Anyway – I was dealt only 3 hands before being moved to Omaha.
The structure at Bellagio is even a litlle strange at the Omaha game – It’s $30/60 with 1/2 kill – A kill is required whenever someone scoops a pot regardless of the size of the pot… not just scoop a pot, but if you win the pot with a bet becuase everybody folds – It’s a kill and the stakes go to $40/80! in one instance I raised my button to $60 when it was folded around to me and the small and big blind folded without contest so I pick up $50 (blinds are $20 & $30) and very next hand have to put out $40 for the kill! I’m not a fan of this structure as I believe it causes alot of varience in the game – one good aspect of the game is that most people defend their kill to a rediculous point of almost always calling a raise. other than that goofy structure everything else about Omaha at Bellagio I liked.
After 4 days I was doing pretty well and was up $2,600 or so, I was really missing Denise and the boys so I had them drive up on Friday to spend the weekend, My mom ended up coming with them and she had never seen Bellagio before so it was nice to give her the tour. While their we all went to KA at MGM, I have to say that if you are going to see a Vegas show you MUST see KA – I have seen almost every Vegas show their is and KA is by far the best show I have ever seen!!
I also want to clear up something that people have asked me about, I decided that I was going to concentrate on live poker more becuase of several reasons:
1. my results in live play have always been better from an hourly rate (not including multi-tabling online) standpoint than online becuase my concentration level is far higher and I am able to use more of my reading skills.
2. I enjoy it so much more!
I’m not “afraid” of what will happen with online poker, That being said I also dont know what the future will hold. I do not want to be dependant upon online poker.
In the coming days I will have an article finished about “going pro” and in it I address in greater detail the reasons for my descision. I still fully support Full Tilt Poker – Infact in light of several recent issues I’m surprised that they do not have a much greater market share.
I have more to write but also alot of work to catch up on so thats all for now.
