Motivation…….

Posted by RounderChris On November - 29 - 2007

For the last month or so I have been completely un-motivated. I am not sure what it is, I was in my kitchen a few minutes ago looking into my livingroom at my huge five-thouseand dollar down filled sectional and room sized ottomon and I started thinking “have I just become too cozy in my surroundings?” My routine has been:
get up – play an hour or two online, take a shower, sit outside and gaze at the pool and waterfall while surfing the web and listning to the radio, throw in an hour here and there for playing xbox.

I have not exercized or used the weight system on my patio in 3 weeks, I used to enjoy 2-3 mile walks in the mornings but that too has gone waste side. I realize now that there is a lazy side to myself that I must overcome. I have always been a very hard working person but what happens when you really dont need to work? for me I guess I get lazy and un-motivated! Tomorrow I am turning this thing around, I am starting off with lifting weights then taking a 2 mile run after that I am puting in a good day online at FullTilt………………..gl

Happy Thanksgiving

Posted by RounderChris On November - 23 - 2007

Happy thanksgiving to everyone.
I have not been playing online lately, not for any reason other than I just have not felt like it it.

This past Tuesday I went to Fort McDowell Casino in fountain hills, I was planning on playing Omaha however my dad had went with me and wanted to play the noon tournament so I played that. This was a $20 buy in tournament with a $10 add-on as soon as you sit down, then there are re-buys for the first hour. Generally I don’t play re-buy tournaments but since my dad was playing I decided to just have fun. I could tell right away that I was a bit rusty at tournament play as its been months since I have played a MTT. The players at the Fort without a doubt were the worst tournament players I have ever played with, Granted – this is a fast paced tournament where the blinds DOUBLE every 30 minutes. I played only 4 or 5 hands for the first hour and won only 1 of those. twice I flopped the nut flush draw WITH two overs to the board and whiffed both times. The tournament started with 91 players and due to tight play and my opponents bad decisions I made the final table. One other strange thing that the casino does is they keep the tables 10 handed!! Once I was at the final table I had a decent chip stack was possibly the chip leader but the blinds were coming up fast – Usually in this spot I would be very aggressive however there were several very short stacks to my right so I knew that the range of hands these guys would be shoving with was very wide so I decided to sit back and let the players eliminate themselves, there was just no chance that I was stealing a pot. When we got down to 3 players the average stack was around 190k and the blinds were at 15/30k with a 1500 ante and we were 16 minutes from the blinds doubling so DEAL TIME! we ended up chopping it up and each of us took $400

After the tournament I tried getting a $20/40 or $30/60 mix game started but that was just not going to happen so I left.

I really enjoyed playing the tournament and will possibly play a few times a week.

Bots Are Everywhere!

Posted by RounderChris On November - 6 - 2007

If your playing certain sites at the lower limits for instance ultimatebet or paradisepoker, chances are your playing against bots. Other sites such as FullTilt and PokerStars have taken an aggressive approach to finding and banning accounts that have proven to be operating bots.

What is a poker bot? in simple terms a “bot” is a program that its creator has set parameters for, it can sit and play for hours upon hours. The idea being that a computer program will never play angry or tilt. Since ABC poker will work at the lower limits a correctly programmed bot can be very profitable.

Is this cheating? this is a hard question to answer – a program can only do what its programmer has told it to do – therefore you are playing against the programmer. While it can be profitable at lower stakes it is very un-profitable at higher stakes where ABC poker is thrown out the window – If you are playing against me with a set plan of raising in this spot and auto folding in that spot you will be exploitable and your tendencies would be found very quickly and used against you. I would never report what I thought to be a bot because it would be way to juicy!
On the other hand – bots are not playing at my level for the reasons I explained however they are chewing away at the lower stakes and the real threat of the “bot problem” is the negative publicity.

Joe is easily scared away! I hate to use the term “fish” because it has been made such a derogatory term. I prefer to say your “average joe” Joe works a decent 9-5 job and is highly intelligent, He enjoys 1-2 hours of poker every other night and while he realizes that he loses he enjoys the game and the money does not mean much to him. Joe does NOT like the idea that he could be playing against a computer and it scares him, It also explains why he has lost (a convenient idea for him that is not based on reality) Therefore he going to quit playing.
The online poker community is fed by guys like Joe at every level, they feed each other the occasional win and in the end the money is fed to those of us that live off it – the sharks.
It is in our best interest (those who make their living off the masses of joes) to look out for them – They don’t mind an honest game of man against man. But when they are deceived into thinking it’s a man when in reality it is a program, then that becomes cheating.

Things like this have often reminded me of playing in the card rooms in the earlier days. There was a time when you could sit at a table in a card room in Phoenix and be playing against a minimum of 3 colluders. At first I was completely blindsided and had no idea – Then it started to ad up and a long time professional let me in on the “crews” that worked these rooms. Once realized I was able to take advantage of their plays. In the last few years card rooms have started banning these teams of colluders however it still go’s on but nothing like it used to be.

For some unknown reason people have turned a blind eye to pokers shady past. I think that because tournaments have been aired on ESPN people are actually buying into the idea that it’s a sport. Poker was never a sport. Poker is about money and only money. The online rooms have actually done more in the way of preventing and cleaning out colluding and cheating than any brick and mortar casino has ever done.

Online rooms need to handle bots in the same way they handle colluders whether it truly is cheating does not matter because the Joes think that it’s cheating – So OUT WITH THEM!

Personal Blogging / Playing4aCure.org

Posted by RounderChris On November - 4 - 2007

I have always swayed from talking about my personal life outside of poker in my journal for various reasons, one of which was that I felt readers were only truly interested in “The Life Of A Poker Player” not the life of a husband and father. Since most of the readers are my friends and family I guess it was a pretty goofy assumption. I have been introduced to many people through this journal that I now consider my friends anyway.

A big part of my family’s lives since 2000 has been cancer, We live with it. My wife Denise was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, We had 5 years of thinking it was over then it returned in 2005, or better said – it was discovered in 2005 as it was not noticed for some time by doctors at mayo clinic who are suppose to be the best in the world. Cancer, is a scary word and when most people are diagnosed they immediately start thinking the end is near, God knows that for a long time that is all that was on Denise and I’s minds. The true reality of our situation and that of millions of others with this disease is that through science and research cancer is something that we will live with for a very long time – not die of!!!!

We understand that another round of chemo could come at any time, And this is something that we have to accept. Chemo is very hard on Denise as you can imagine, It weakens her severely. – compared to 6 years ago when she began chemo for the first time – it’s a breeze!! don’t get me wrong here, chemo is bad stuff and nobody would ever want to face it today however again thanks to research it has became far more bearable than it was just 6 years ago!!!!!!!!

We have been strong supporters of organizations such as Susan G. Komen Foundation, that not only spends millions of dollars on research but also education and support for those dealing with this horrific disease. Komen Foundation started the “Race For The Cure” which is highly successful and here in Phoenix drew 40,000 supporters and raised more than 2 million dollars in 1 day. It shows how many people are touched by this disease, It’s hard to find somebody who’s mother, sister, doughtier, doughtier in law, cousin or best friend has not been diagnosed at some point.

My wife and I wanted to do more so we started a non-profit organization called playing4aCure.org, Along with the help and support of FullTiltPoker we are holding weekly tournaments to raise money for the Komen Foundation. These tournaments are in the beginning stages so the turn out for our first event was sadly only 3 players, however we had very little time to prepare and let everyone know about it.

You can find out about our Sunday tournaments on this site, got to “Playing4aCure.org” page.

I will also be playing a weekly live tournament here in Phoenix, not sure which casino yet, and will be donating all the winnings to the Komen Foundation – once i decide the venue I will post it here so you locals can come support me – I will be the player in pink :)

Aside from raising money we are just as focused in raising awareness and sharing our story with those that have recently been diagnosed. A few of you have mentioned family members to me that are facing this disease and I want you to know that I welcome your emails, ask me anything you like about what we have went through or what we go through now, or just vent.

cheers for now.
